Operativa is pleased to present La strega si trasforma persino in vento, Giulia Mangoni’s first solo show at the gallery. The exhibition presents a new production of works by the Italian-Brazilian artist, investigating the folklore of the Ciociaria Region – her home territory – that emerges from the study of local and fantastic creatures, oral traditions, and archival imagery. Drawing on ancient references and contemporary collective memory, the artist subverts the boundaries between fiction and reality, evoking a natural world filled with magical phenomena and ghostly forces, coexisting with daily life.

The collection of ancient folkloric tales finds its manifestation and is emphasized within the artist’s paintings through a choral narrative peopled by bizarre and marginalised figures in the guise of ghosts, enchanted animals, gnomes, dwarves, and werewolves, revealing an extraordinary loyalty to the absurd.

In the context of a reinterpretation of ancient myths of the extraordinary, the figure-archetype of the witch in particular takes on a crucial role. Represented as a hybrid and multifaceted being, an evanescent human figure, the witch becomes the symbol of a dreamlike motif capable of reinventing itself through transformation and imagination, reminding us of <>

The exhibition’s narrative is essentially a symbolic one that follows codes regulated by multi-layered interpretations in which each intervention lets transpire a portion of the research process undertaken by the artist, and in which a spatial and compositional ambiguity is celebrated.

Giulia Mangoni’s intimate, powerful, and collective practice creates a universe of personal mythologies that oscillates between the grotesque and the fantastic. Inhabited by bizarre creatures with often animal-like features, the artist provides us with an imaginary bestiary as a tool for exploring mystical parallel worlds, and mysterious yet symbolic narratives.
